Montipora White: Coral Disease Rears Its Head in Hawai'i

By Brad Shook - Posted on 20 April 2010

This bleeching that is happening to the montipora really makes me wonder if it is just natures way of keeping the coral species balanced out. Montipora is such a fast and envasive grower it seams that if bleaching did not happen from time to time that we would only  have montipora left. I know that in my home aquarium I am constantly having to scrape the montipora off the rock to keep it from over taking my other sps corals. Also, I read all the time about experienced reef keepers with very mature systems have corals RTN with no reasoning as to why. Again makes me wonder if it is just soomething built into these corals to keep the balance.
